FAQ
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about the Securebooks and Endless OS
Does the Securebook connect to the Internet?
No, the Securebook by itself does not have any ability to connect to the Internet. To connect the Securebook to the Internet, it must be docked to a Black Docking Station (for Ethernet-based connections) or to a Red Docking Station (for WiFi-based connections).
How do I connect my Securebook to a WiFi Network?
There are a number of steps. First you must have run the Admin Tools utility (instructions here) to properly set all your settings and set your WiFi SSID and Password. Once those are set, reboot the Securebook while it is docked onto a Red (WiFi) Docking Station. It is very important that you have the Securebook attached to the docking station before powering the Securebook on. If the Securebook still doesn't connect after accomplishing all these steps, here is a checklist of things to check: Make sure the Securebook is docked completely (it will sit flush against the docking station), make sure your WiFi credentials are correct using Admin Tools, make sure your WiFi router is on and broadcasting. If problems persist, try a different red docking station, a different Securebook, or try connecting to a different WiFi signal.
How do I connect to a RACHEL-Plus Device?
Connecting to a RACHEL device is functionally the same as connecting to any WiFi network, using the Admin Tools Utility you have to set the WiFi credentials (SSID and Password), then reboot while docked to a Red Docking Station. Once you are connected to the RACHEL device's WiFi signal, open your web browser and type "168.192.0.2" into the address bar and hit enter. We recommend you bookmark the RACHEL homepage so that you don't need to type in the IP address anytime you want to access RACHEL content.
How do I add new content?
Adding new content can be done in two different ways. New applications can be installed from the app center while the Securebook is connected to an open internet source. This should only be done as and by the Administrator. To install an application (more detailed instructions here) simply find the application you wish to install in the App Center, then select it and click the "Download" button which will download and automatically install the application. The Second method is for non-application content such as files. To add this content to the Securebook you must first put the content onto a USB device and then, while the Securebook is docked to a Black Docking Station, plug the USB into the docking station and manually move the files from the USB to the Securebook. More detailed instructions are available in this guide.
How do I print content from the Securebook?
Printing on the Securebook is as easy as plugging in a USB flashdrive. All you need to do is find the USB Printer cable that is plugged into the printer you want to print from, plug the USB side in to the Black Docking Station, Dock the Securebook to the Black Docking Station, Open the content you wish to print, then find and select the print option with the printer as your chosen printing device. Make sure that the printer has paper to print on and isn't out of ink. Additionally, if the printer doesn't print your content in at least 30 seconds, check to see if there are other printing jobs pending in the printer. By canceling all those pending prints, yours should then be ready to print.
How do I check the Student's Browser History?
To check the Student's browser history you will need to log into the student's account, open the web browser, type "chrome://history" into the address bar, and hit enter. This will lead you to the Chrome History tab which will show you all the websites the student has accessed. See this link for a more detailed instructive tutorial.
Are there Parental Controls to prevent Students from accessing certain applications?
If certain applications prove to be counterproductive for a Student or Students you can limit and even remove their ability to access the application entirely. In the desktop search bar type "Parental Controls" and then click on the Parental Controls icon. Next select the "Unlock" button, enter the jadmin credentials, and select the user whose apps you want to restrict. Once the correct user is selected, select the "Restrict Applications" button. This will pop up a window showing all of the apps installed on Endless and a toggle. Any apps that you wish to make unavailable to the user, simply toggle the app to the right (should turn yellow). Select all the apps you are restricting and when you are finished simply close the popup window as well as the Parental Controls window, it saves the settings automatically! Can a Securebook have multiple student accounts?
Technically yes, the Securebooks are fully capable of having multiple student accounts, but World Possible recommends keeping the student to Securebook ratio 1:1. Follow this guide to create and/or edit user accounts.
The youth keep changing their usernames, how do I stop this?
Part of the initial setup process is running a script called first setup in the Admin Tools Utility which helps lock down the Student account, one such lock is that it prevents the Student from changing their username. To run the first setup script, create an Admin Tools USB and then have it run the first setup script on the Securebook (instructions here).
How do I add Icons to the Desktop?
Adding an icon to the desktop is as simple as finding the Application in the App Center, then selecting the "Add to Desktop" button. Follow this guide for more concise instructions.
Is there a faster way to access Apps than from Icons on the Desktop?
Yes! While you have an Application open you can see it's icon in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. If you right click on the Icon you can pin it to the taskbar so that even when the application is not open or active you can quickly launch it by selecting the pinned icon from the taskbar. Similarly, to unpin an icon from the taskbar, right click it and select the unpin option. For a more detailed guide, check out this tutorial!
How do I access hidden files and folders on Endless?
Seeing hidden files and folders is an important part of checking a youth's account, and thankfully Endless OS has an easy way to accomplish this. While in the Document Explorer window, simply click the three horizontal bars icon in the top right, then select the "See Hidden Files" checkbox. For more detailed instructions, see this guide. Additionally to make a file/folder hidden, simply rename it with a period as the first character in the file name. For instance: "secret_files.txt" is visible no matter what, but ".secret_files.txt" will only be visible to users with the "Show Hidden Files" checkbox checked.
I've forgotten the jadmin password, how do I recover it?
Unfortunately if you forget the jadmin password (and no one else knows it) you will need to reimage the Securebook or Securebooks you are working with. The instructions for reimaging are in this tutorial. We highly recommend you use a USB to back up any student files so they do not lose progress on any treatment, assignments, or creative endeavors. Backing up the student files is as easy as having them put all the files they want saved into a folder, then moving that folder to a USB so you can just move the files back into their new account after the reimage.
The Securebook's touchpad and keyboard are too small, can I use a separate mouse & keyboard?
Absolutely! The only caveat here is that the Securebook must be docked to a Black Docking Station which you would connect the separate mouse and keyboard to. Additionally, the Black Docking Station also provides the Securebook an HDMI port so that you can also connect it to a second monitor incase the screen is too small for you.
